What Is A Disabled Facilities Grant?

Local authorities offer grants to people with disabilities who want to make home improvements in order to help them move around their home more easily. This can include things like:

  • Widen doors and install ramps
  • Improve access to rooms and facilities – e.g., stairlifts or a downstairs bathroom
  • Provide a heating system suitable for your needs
  • Adapt heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use

Who Can Apply For Grants?

The residents of housing associations, private tenants and home owners may apply to the local council for a disability grant if they are disabled or anyone with whom they reside with is. Property owners with disabled tenants can also apply.

Am I Eligible?

You could be eligible if you are registered disabled or eligible to register as disabled, have a low income, and savings of less than £6000. On request, our knowledgeable team members will provide you with additional information.

What Happens Next?

Your local council should arrange for an Occupational Therapist to meet you at home before you make a decision.

How Long Does It Take To Approve a Grant?

It is determined by the local council to which you apply and how long it takes them to process your application. On average, it takes 12 to 14 weeks, but more complicated installations can take longer.

VAT Exemption Guidance

Did you know that we can deduct the VAT on our products and installations if you are disabled or over 60 and require a bathroom adaptation to help you live more comfortably? If this applies to you, talk to the surveyor during the home visit and they will happily advise.

Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) Information
